Upcoming Schedule, Spring 2023

First, thanks to everyone who joined us at “What Is Progressive Christianity?” on March 1. If you missed it, please join us any Thursday to learn about it! Plus, you can look at the PowerPoint we went through.

There will be NO MEETING on March 16, nor on March 30, due to spring recess (St. Pat’s) and spring break, respectively. We WILL meet on March 23.

April 6 is Maundy Thursday (also called Holy Thursday). Most likely, we will not have a regular meeting, but instead will encourage everyone to participate in a Maundy Thursday service at a church of their choosing. Details for First Presbyterian Church and Christ Episcopal Church will be added shortly.

April 10 is Interfaith Dialogue. Common Call is a member of the Campus Ministries Association. The Interfaith Dialogue is CMA’s flagship event. It is open to people of every faith or no faith. The more diversity, the better. Historically, we often have a wide range of Christians, a few atheists, and often some Muslims. CMA is trying to engage other faiths as well, such as Jews, Hindus, Buddhists, etc. The event will be held in the Havener Center, Carver/Turner room, 7-9 pm. Please join us!

April 13, we are back to normal for the rest of the semester. Hope you can join us!

“What Is Progressive Christianity?” Scheduled for September 15

Building off last year’s success, we will hold an information session on September 15 at 5 pm in the Turner room of the Havener Center. As we did in February, we’ll have snacks, a presentation about our approach to faith, and a discussion. (Note, this was originally scheduled for September 22 but moved due to the equinox event and convocation.)

Let’s Get Started!

Welcome everyone to Fall 2022! Hope you had a good summer and are ready for a new semester!

Our first meeting will be August 25, 5 pm at Christ Episcopal Church. We will share a meal (provided by Rev. Mary) and discuss this week’s article from The Wired Word. Please join our Discord server to get the reading. The headline for this week is, “Gallup Poll: Fewer Americans Now View the Bible as the Literal Word of God.”

Mark your calendars! We will be having another “What Is Progressive Christianity?” event on September 22. More details to come.

Fall 2022 Planning

This fall, we will continue our regular schedule from last semester. We will meet on Thursdays at 5 pm to share a meal provided by one of the sponsoring churches. We will discuss current events from a progressive Christian perspective, using The Wired Word as conversation starters.

Mark your calendars! Our first meeting will be during the first week of class, August 25. The next day, August 26, is MinerRama. Some Thursday in September, we will also have a “What Is Progressive Christianity?” event, as we did last semester. Details TBD.

See you at 5 pm on August 25 at Christ Episcopal Church!

A Big Week!

We have a big week coming up!

  • Tomorrow, Friday, April 8, there is a campus-wide worship service at the Puck. Games & food at 4 pm, worship at 5 pm.
  • Sunday is Palm Sunday, the start of Holy Week.
  • Monday is the Interfaith Dialogue, sponsored by the Campus Ministries Association (of which we are a part). April 11, 7 pm, Carver/Turner room. There will be food provided. Hope everyone can join us!
  • Next Thursday, April 14, is Maundy Thursday. No Common Call meeting. You are encouraged to attend service with one of the sponsoring churches:
    • Christ Episcopal will be meeting at 5 pm in the room where we normally meet to share a meal. Afterwards will be a foot-washing ceremony in the sanctuary, living out John 13.
    • First Presbyterian Church will be meeting at 5:30 pm at Veterans Memorial Park. Feel free to bring a meal, or not. We will celebrate communion as Jesus instituted.
  • Then of course there’s Easter!

It seems that bad weather always comes on Thursday. Since campus has closed, our meeting tonight will be on Zoom at 5:00 pm. Hope you can join us!

Thanks for a great event!

We had a great turnout for our event, “What Is Progressive Christianity?” We’re planning to do another similar event later in the semester. Meanwhile, a few things:

The invite link for Discord was expired. Here’s a new one that will last: https://discord.gg/g5qCHr5MdQ.

We welcome anyone who would like to join our community and seek God’s path chosen for us, Thursdays at 5 pm at Christ Episcopal Church. Food and fellowship! We’re going to get back on our routine of using The Wired Word. I can’t post the reading publicly, but will publish it on Discord. I generally publish it on Sunday or Monday for the upcoming Thursday.

If you’d like to do some reading, here are a bunch of websites that I have found helpful:

What Is Progressive Christianity? An Information Session

Progressive Christianity emphasizes the Way and teachings of Jesus, and not merely His person, as we seek to build a more just, inclusive, and connected society. Come and learn more about this perspective at a free information session on February 10 at 5 pm in the Havener Center, St. Pat’s A. Our goal is not to argue, convince, or debate, but merely to inform people of a spiritual path that is often ignored in public discourse.

We will share light refreshments, discuss some basic principles, and begin a conversation about what and how we believe. This is part of our calling to build a community that is inclusive of ALL people, regardless of their beliefs, race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, or any other artificial barrier humans put between themselves.

Zoom this week!

This week, the weather looks pretty nasty. So on February 3 at 5 pm, we will meet on Zoom instead:

Our main task will be to prepare for next week’s event, “What Is Progressive Christianity?” That will be held in St. Pat’s A in the Havener Center on February 10 at 5:00 pm. Invite your friends, your enemies, anyone who’s interested!

Spring 2022 – Welcome Back!

The new semester is beginning. COVID-19 is still running pretty hot, but we’re going to try our best to have somewhat normal meetings. We will meet Thursdays at 5:00 at Christ Episcopal, which is at 1000 N. Main, just east of Castleman Hall/Leach Theatre. We will share a meal and then discuss a topic drawn from the news using The Wired Word. We cannot publicly post the reading, but I’ll share it on our Discord server. (We generally run a week behind because the new readings come out on Thursday.)

These first few weeks, we will also spend a little time discussing progressive Christianity in preparation for our event on February 10, “What Is Progressive Christianity?” This will be an information session held in St. Pat’s A in place of our normal meeting (at 5 pm). Please invite your friends and your enemies–anyone who might want to learn more about a different perspective on faith in Jesus Christ.

Looking forward to a great semester! Our basic COVID protocols are: masks when appropriate but unmasked while eating; stay away if you’re sick.
